Saving Horse Hill
Beginning in the early 1960’s, developers proposed numerous plans for high-density housing on Horse Hill. Vigilant local residents fought repeatedly to preserve this land for enjoyment by all. In 1990, the City of Mill Valley, assisted by state funds, the generous donations from many individuals and community groups, plus contributions from Marin’s horse-lovers, purchased Horse Hill. The land was deeded to the Marin County Open Space District in 1992, permanently protecting it as open space. Since then, dedicated volunteers have restored many acres of this preserve’s native habitats in an ongoing battle against French broom and other invasive, exotic plants.
The Alto Bowl Horseowners Association
The preservation of horse grazing on Horse Hill is one of the "Save Horse Hill" campaign's realized dreams. The ABHA, a cooperative non-profit association, has pastured horses on Horse Hill since 1971, and holds a current grazing lease with the MCOSD.
The ABHA is responsible for all equine care and horse-related activities at Horse Hill. Each horse is individually owned; the herd size is limited to 14. When available, pasture spots are filled by a random drawing open to all horseowners.
The ABHA works closely with the MCOSD to insure that humans and horses continue to share and enjoy Horse Hill’s pastoral landscape. For more info, please write: ABHA, PO Box 1954, Mill Valley, CA 94942
Please... help us keep the horses healthy and happy.
•Do not feed the horses anything.
•Do not leave horse food, treats, straw or any other materials anywhere on the Preserve.
•Do not allow your dog to run freely around the horses.
•Do not attempt to catch or ride the horses.
•Horses are large, powerful animals that can move quickly if startled or harrassed. Please enjoy horsewatching from a safe distance.
Thanks for your cooperation!
